WOW! Look what we’ve discovered?
As our regular and loyal guests already know at River Haven we take great pride in the presentation of our vineyard and the protection of our natural environment. In addition to the planting of native species we’ve also been clearing out some of the historic weeds such as Old Man’s Pubes, Hogwort and Widow’s Waffle. Our team have made astonishing progress into the wilderness and they’ve become accustomed to discovering rare species of wildlife, tax dodgers and the occasional Ford Cortina but what happened this week was unparalleled.
We found an ancient tree.
The analysis of the bark has confirmed that it is the oldest tree in New Zealand. Top arborealist Professor Syracuse Quim, head of Invercargill’s renowned Bush Faculty, said “its the oldest tree I’ve seen this year”.
So there you have it. River Haven is officially home to New Zealand’s oldest tree. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can tell you who is living in it.
